I'm the short guy on the right. The short guy on the left is a blackfish which almost won the big fish contest that year in Bayville, NY. The tall guy in the center is my grandfather. I called him "Gramps".
My parents employed the nom de enfant naming technique. I, playing the part of the enfant , would
blurt out some noises whenever a relative stuck his or her face close to
mine. My parents interpreted those sounds, converting them into
a name. This name was then applied to that relative who was required
to respond to that name from that day forward.

I guess Gramps got off easy. Given the range of sounds an infant can make, his name could have been much worse...

This coat of arms is that of the Swedish
island of Götland where my dad and his family originated. |
|
His name was originally spelled Pettersson. It was shortened to Peterson by the US Immigration Department's Office for the Removal of Excess Consonants.
I have found one coat of arms for the name Pettersson.
It was covered by daisies and pansies. Not the sort of thing your standard virile viking would carry into battle. Or even wear to town. Unless he was really, really self-confident. |
